Nature

There is a strange atmosphere in Australia at the moment. As you may have heard there have been devastating floods in Queensland, a state thousands of kilometres north from us. Nevertheless, it has really introduced a strange, anxious quiet even this far away. That's exacerbated I think by the oppressively humid whether we're having down here as well as heavy rain ourselves (it is pouring outside at the moment). As a famous poem here says, it really is a land of "drought and flooding rains". A land of extremes, in which the precarious nature of human life in the face of nature is never far from the surface.

They are showing pictures of Down Under under water like every hour on TV here and I'm still shocked. I see those tiny raindrops, think of the floods and can't believe it's the same, basically...

We've just been watching more footage on tv...people's house just completely underwater, the only thing sticking up the tops of street signs...

I've seen it in TV, too. Really frightening :-(.

We have (smaller) flood problems in Germany, too - snow is melting since a week and we have a lot of rain - but the cities near the rivers where this happens are a bit used to it, and so it's no fun, but still no catastrophe.

I think that's the thing - there has been *so* much water here. They have provisions for flooding in the tropical North but the magnitude just took them by surprise.

Yes, we have these frightful pictures in our TV, too. And I am thinking about you then.
