Touche crochet

I can't crochet. I. can't. crochet. I can't crochet! I have tried and I have tried and I have tried but I just can't crochet. I am totally fascinated by all of the different ways that stitches can lock together to make a whole gorgeous thing and while my knitting has improved, I cannot crochet. I have watched You Tube videos. I have read books. I have studied diagrams. And yet.

Yesterday I thought I had made real progress. I managed a line of chain stitch ('casting on' in crochet world, I guess) and then a first row. But then I had to 'turn'. Just flip your work over and start again, the nice lady on the You Tube video calmly said. I flipped. Then I flipped it back the other way. Then I flipped it upside down. My yarn tail got in the way. I flipped again. I could feel the old, familiar crochet fog filling my mind. Damn!

Does anyone know how to crochet? If you do, where did you learn?

At least I've had a little bit of Swedish pop to keep me calm...

I can crochet, I guess my grandmother showed me, or/and I was shown in primary school were I did some assymetric pottholder. I remember that I crocheted holey clothes for some dolls. It is not so difficult, much easier than knitting, I guess. Maybe this helps you: http://www.basteln-mit-buttinette.de/handarbeiten/2760-haekeln-fuer-anfanger

I too know how to crochet. Not the really complex stuff, or the lace-making thingy, though. I learned it at school and got some help with the advanced stuff from my mom. I don't think it's that complicated, but I can't knit to save my life.

You should be fine if you keep on trying. ^_^

Is it part of the German school curriculum, Sefarina? Wish it was here!

I think so. For the first six years I had obligatory handicraft lessons in which we had to sew, embroider, weave, knit and crochet.
Later, when I switched from natural science to arts, I had to take handicraft again. It was mainly pottery and sculpting.

Wow! I would've love that!! Did the boys take those subjects too?

I had handicraft lessons only in the 3. and 4. year of my schooltime. Boys and girls were seperated (?), and while one group was working with wood (carpentry), the other worked with wool and cloth. Than we changed. Don't know why we were seperated, I guess this wont be like this any longer. Don't know if this studies do still exists. In highschool, I have chosen carpentry for 2 years when I had the choice between additional sports, carpentry, pottery and some other stuff. There was no more handicraft with knitting and stitching than.

Yeah, boys and girls were in one course, and apparently still are, at my old school anyways. My nephew (10) is great at knitting and does beautiful embroidery. ^^
But cooking classes are separated, whith the boys only learning how to warm up pizza and sausages. (WTF?)

Bodecea & Sefarina -

Wow - really interesting! I know that at school we did 'needlecraft' in year 7 (age 12-13) and then cooking in year 8. I was at a girls-only school but I know that at my husband's boys-only school they did do anything like that. In year 9, we did typing!! I am so old that we actually learnt on typewriters, not computers! I doubt that these subjects are studied at my old school now.

Good on your nephew, Sefarina!
